During a daily perusal of Instagram hashtags, we stumbled across a client’s account that has seemingly lost the ability to search for hashtags directly.
Confused, we quickly turned to a few other accounts that we manage to find that this seemed to be an isolated incident. Now, it might be that it’s just a technical mistake, as Instagram, just like any other app or software program, is prone to bugs that need fixing. However, after shutting down, restarting the phone and updating the app, we realised that this was still the case.
Of course, the ability to search for hashtags has not been entirely removed on this account. What has happened is that they have blended all of the previous 4 “Sections” such as, Top, Accounts, Tags & Place. So regardless of whether you’re hoping to search for an account or a hashtag, you’ll need to do this from the one search bar.
Instagram is a big fan of rolling out changes in small, ever-increasing stages (see the removal of likes in Canda), and this could just be a silent trial that could be removed if it doesn’t work to their satisfaction.
With hashtags taking a huge backseat in many social media engagement plans across the last couple of years, it has us wondering whether the ability to search for profiles and hashtags in the one location will lead to increased hashtag searchability over the next period of Instagram’s lifespan. I suppose we will soon find out.
